Why is Firozabad called the glass city of India?
Firozabad is a city in western Uttar Pradesh, near Agra. It is known across India as the glass city, and it is the country’s best-known centre for glass bangles. Furnaces, factories and home workshops across the city each take part in a different stage of making a bangle.
For many Indian women, glass bangles are a sign of marriage, or suhag. That is why Firozabad is also called Suhag Nagri, the city of suhag. Bangles made here travel to markets, weddings and festivals all over India.
What is the Firozabad Glass GI tag?
“Firozabad Glass” is a registered Geographical Indication (GI) in India. A GI links a product to the place where it is traditionally made, and the Firozabad Glass registration covers glass products of the region, including bangles.
Only producers who are registered as authorised users may use the GI tag on their products.
How are glass bangles made?
Melting the glass
Sand, soda ash and other raw materials are mixed with colours and melted in large furnaces at very high heat.
Drawing the coil
A worker gathers molten glass on an iron rod and winds it as a thin strand around a turning metal cylinder. This makes a long, spring-like coil.
Cutting
The coil is cut along its length, so it falls apart into many open rings of the same size.
Joining and sizing
The two ends of each ring are softened over a small flame and pressed together to close the bangle. Sizes are then checked and sorted.
Decorating
Bangles are painted, glittered or set with stones and zari-style work by hand. Some designs are heated again to fix the decoration.
Sorting and packing
Finished bangles are checked, tied into sets by size and colour, and packed for dispatch.
